Tools for research

Here is a list of applications/tools I have found useful.

I use macOS:

• Zotero: reference manager
• Obsidian.md: note editor
• VS Code: code editor
• Overleaf: text processor for research manuscripts
• Quarto: for Markdown presentation slides (and this website!)
• Brave: internet browser
• Toggl: time tracker
• Purr: local audio transcription (MLX-accelerated), good for meetings
• Glance: syntax highlighting for macOS quicklook

and an Android phone:

• Moon+ Reader Pro: epub and PDF reader
• Readest: epub and PDF reader with built-in translator

Some other useful things:

• For serious diagrams with math, Asymptote (online) or TikZ (LLMs are quite good at generating TikZ code)
• For presentations, Beamer (and BeamerQT), though often it is easier to use a combination of e.g. Google Slides + LaTeXiT
